Transport group PISTON (Pagkakaisa ng mga Samahan ng Tsuper at Operator Nationwide) will hold a nationwide transport Today, September 18, to protest alleged corruption involving the Department of Public Works and Highways’ (DPWH) flood control projects.
In a statement released on Sunday, September 14, the group said the strike is a protest against widespread corruption surrounding the failed flood control project.
It criticized the government's inaction and highlighted growing public dissatisfaction with the lack of concrete results despite numerous investigations.
“Hindi na sapat ang puro hearing at imbestigasyon. Dapat may managot! Dapat may makulong,” Piston said in a Facebook post, adding that on Sept. 18, the transport sector must take to the streets to show its anger and demand for justice.
Moreover, the transport group also highlighted that jeepney drivers pay around P13,000 in oil taxes each month, while mototaxi riders spend about P4,000, adding that operators of modern jeepneys suffer the most, reaching up to P23,000 monthly for value-added and excise taxes.
Although the group has yet to release further details about the planned transport strike, it also called on the public to join a massive protest with other groups on September 21 at Luneta Park in Manila.
Meanwhile, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. respects freedom of expression, as several groups took to the streets last week to protest the irregularities in the government's flood control projects.
