The new normal has affected people in so many ways, one of which made leadership arduous to the next level. During this time of the year, the Lyceum of Alabang conducts an election for new leaders. New functionaries that would make a change despite the circumstances students experience: hardships, efforts, and breakdowns which sometimes lead to something else. To the future leader of the institution, what does leadership mean to you? How will you make change? Can you really fulfill the role of a president?
The Lycean Journal conducted an online interview with those who are running for president about their platforms and motives on why they are running for SSG (Supreme Student Government) highest position.
Jacelle M. Yambao from the P.O.W.E.R. Partylist President provided platforms called the “Rising Star”, a virtual talent show and “Reconnect”, an online worship service that is open for all faculty members and students. She also mentioned how she will be a symbol of courage, hope, and equality and will be an effective liaison between the school personnel by actively cooperating with them, building communication and by having a will to take initiative to proactively solve conflicts and address issues.
Yambao’s message is, "To every Lycean, I believe that you are all intelligent and courageous! I want you all to think that your vote is like gold, so treasure it. Remember that your vote matters as you choose someone to bring difference into our school year."
Ma. Kyla Athena A. Ambuya, the E.Y.Y. Partylist President, provided platforms implementing the “Constitution”, an avenue to promote better student representation, rights, aspirations, the “By-Laws” working system wherein she and her subordinates will ensure the balance of power and responsibilities, the “Virtual Praise and Worship”, the “Lyceans' Safe Place” or “Webinar Podcast”, a motivational page to council students whom are having a hard time and lastly, the OTC or “Online Talent Competition” where students could showcase their talents. She stated how she wants to bridge the gap between ineffective and shallow leadership to a more evolved, sustainable, effective, and positive youth leadership.
Ambuya’s message is, "Lyceans, I know that you deserve more, you guys deserve the best kind of Leadership and the time to evolve is now, with my co-officers please help us to attain the promise of holistic student growth and development let's work hand in hand in unlocking your untapped skills and potentials. Let me be your voice, the voice of the youth, and let's prove to them that the Youth is worth Yarning for."
Samantha Faye T. Ong, the M.O.D.U.L.E. Partylist President, provided platforms called C.O.R.E. Values (Critique Outlines from Right Education Values), it is focused on student’s responsibility and right values, the Shark Senior’s B.O.T.S. (Battle of the Strands), an online event wherein strands compete with the use of their intelligence, the “Talentadong Lyceans” to showcase student’s talents, the “United Magma Tournament” for online gaming, the “Just-in-Case” and “RecycLyceans” which are related to cleanliness and are applicable to face-to-face classes only. She mentioned how she wants to be the action to the voices her co-Lyceans screams and to be the model of discipline.
To the Lyceans, Ong’s message is, "I will not promise anything besides trying my very best to fulfill and do my duty as your SSG President. I will TRY to make this school year a memorable year with my co-officers especially to us seniors despite the pandemic because we are the millennial generation and we adapt easily because of technology to the new normal." She stated as she reminded Lyceans that this year would be a memorable one.
Caloy D. Carvajal, the B.A.G.S.I.K. Partylist President, provided platforms called “Piso mula sa Puso'' which aims to help students in need by means of load for online classes by having generous Lyceans donate one peso or any amount they could give, the “Behind the Screen” which is an online symposium addressing mental health awareness and the proper use of internet, and the “O.G. Tournament”, a fundraising event for chosen students who struggle in providing data for online classes. He stated how he wants to represent the student body and empower them using his voice, and that he is an experienced, great leader.
Carvajal’s message is, “To all Lyceans, allow me to be your leader again, I promise to provide you great service with the help of my skills and dedication. I will be your voice and source of courage. Mabuhay Kabataan!!! At muling maghahasik, at isisiksik ang serbisyong maBAGSIK, Caloy Carvajal for President.”
Jhamille Kaye O. Targa, the S.A.N.A. O. L. Partylist President, provided platforms called the Online Help Desk, it is focused on helping students regarding school concerns, the “Battle of the Strands”, an online gaming tournament made to ease the pressure of online classes, the “Mental Health Awareness Program”, it is to help student’s mental state, the “Piso para kay Klasmeyt”, it is to raise funds for students who struggle with providing data, the “Online Advocacy” to monitor each section through class presidents, the “Wall of Fame”, a pageant made to encourage students in boosting their confidence, and the “Boses ng Kabataan para sa Bayan”, a contest made to harness student’s talents. She mentioned how this is an opportunity for her to give changes in the institution.
Targa’s message is, “I may not be the most well-known person running for student council president, but you matter. Your opinions matter. Don't choose someone who will make all of the decisions for you. Don't vote for the person who will pick whatever their friends want them to choose. Establishing a vision of where you want to be in the long term will inspire others to look to their future. I want to vision the aim for our future academic year despite this pandemic. As a candidate, I must provide the necessary motivation for you to define what I aim for and to compare it to what will change in the near future. within yourself. Leaders are made, not born. I am not just a leader to just be a leader, but an encourager to let them realize that, it's never too late to change the perspective of our world with bravery and righteousness in handling and the potential challenges. When describing myself as a leader, I am more likely to highlight all of my most positive attributes, but I am fully aware of where I fall short as a leader, which is an important reflection of understanding myself as a person and leader, I am not as likely to highlight those negative attributes when describing my leadership skills or style. Because I do believe that there is no shortcut in developing your leadership potentials, I will gradually grow as a person I want to be - To make change. Therefore, I am portraying the leader I aspire to be. And I want all of my fellow classmates, to never stop looking up while accomplishing their dreams step by step.”
Shiela Kryan B. Acance, the Chairman of the COMSELEC 2020-2021, ensured the success of this year's election despite it shifting to online platforms. “The reliability of election is ensured because the name of the students will be indicated and won’t cause a thinking that there are invented accounts. Prior to that, it will remain confidential. Only I, the Adviser of Commission on Student Election, is the only one who can access the voting system to prevent edits that can cause invalid results.”
