With the recent signing of the measure institutionalizing the modernization of the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP), firefighters will not only carry water cannons but also firearms.
President Rodrigo Duterte has signed into law the Republic Act 11589 or “An Act Strengthening and Modernizing the Bureau of Fire Protection and Appropriating Funds, therefore.”
Republic Act No. 11589 is seen to expand the powers and functions of the bureau - including establishing regional fire laboratories, research and testing facilities, and acquiring modern fire equipment.
Bill sponsor and Senator Bato dela Rosa said that under the bill, a total of 2,282 firefighters would be authorized to carry guns to help protect their colleagues in the performance of their duties.
By allowing them to carry firearms, they would be confident in doing their jobs, President Duterte said.
