LITERARY: "Je T’aime Bien” by: Ley Anne Caringal

Three days before valentine’s day.

What should I do?

Should I walk towards him and tell him that I liked him for a long time now? That would be…weird. Should I leave a letter to the librarian and ask her to give it to him? No. Should I wait for Valentine? Big NO.

You know what? I was going to talk to him right now—definitely not right now. “Let’s go, Noah.” It was, once again, the beautiful girl who always fetched Noah, Ava. “Be right there,” Noah nodded and Ava left. Noah looked at me. I swear I was fast as the light when I looked away. I was 100% sure that my cheeks looked like a tomato right now.

Two days before Valentine’s day.

I was still on my usual spot, thank you very much. No, I didn’t confess yet and yes, I won’t do it anymore. The guy had a girlfriend, I should remember that. I was sipping my iced coffee while reading “Beautiful Disaster” by Jamie McGuire. Recommend it if you love falling for a bad boy.

“Did you do it?” Ava asked. Of course, I could hear them. My seat and Noah’s weren’t that far from each other. “No,” Noah answered. I caught him stealing a glance at me. No way...did they know? How?! Should I say sorry for liking her boyfriend?

A day before Valentine’s day.

Well, hello there. I was very much alive. Well, barely alive after what happened yesterday. I sat down at my usual spot and there was a letter from the library. Every Valentine's day, they always held an event like giving a bookmark to the person you like, bringing them here, and so on.

The event for tomorrow would be giving the book to the person you liked. It should deliver your message through the title or the story itself.

Looks like I wouldn’t be going to the library tomorrow.

Valentine’s day.

I lied.

I came here.

I was shaking so hard. I didn’t get enough sleep. I was thinking—no, contemplating. If I would attend this wonderful event. Insert my awkward smiling face. I saw Noah sitting at his usual spot and it looked like he was waiting for someone. Probably Ava. I sighed and went past him. Okay, romance section it was!

I scanned every book, even read the first chapter but heck! I couldn’t find any book! “I can do this,” I said to myself. “You can do this, Ella,” I whispered and closed my eyes. “Let’s g—”

“Oops, I’m sorry!”

Tell me next time to not close my eyes.

“Noah?” I muttered. He smiled. I bowed and went straight. Gosh. Someone slap me!

I went to the last shelf and behold! I found French-titled books! I searched every meaning in Google and I found what I needed.

Je T'aime Bien.

But as I reached for it, I felt a soft hand. It was Noah, getting the same book I was getting. I thought I should lend this to him. I smiled and backed away. I walked away from him. Well, that was a lot of damage.

“Hey, Ella?” I turned around and saw Noah. He handed me the book. “For you.”

“Uh, no. It’s okay! I’ll just find another book to give and—”

“Uh...I’m giving this to you. Happy Valentine’s Day, Ella. See you tomorrow.”

“Omg! You did it, brother!” Ava said.

They were siblings?!

“Ask her out.”

“No, I can’t.”

I looked at the book and back at him. Yeah, I should say this. “Noah?” They both looked at me and heck I was too shy. “I like you, too,” I said and run outside the library.

Yeah. I deserve some iced coffee.
