On a report from December 23, 2022, the Department of Health (DOH) states that there are 4 cases of the BF.7 omicron subvariant inside the Philippines.
Based on a genome sequencing performed by the University of the Philippines-Philippine Genome Center (UP-PGC) on December 14 and 15, the National Capital Region (NCR) is home to the first case of the BF.7 Omicron subvariant.
The whereabouts of the other 3 cases were not clarified by the DOH.
The BF.7 Omicron subvariant does not appear to indicate worse disease severity in contrast to the initial Omicron subvariant.
Due to transmission advantages compared to other variants, the BF.7 cases reported under the Omicron subvariant are categorized as "variant under monitoring" and may have genetic changes that affect epidemiology or fitness, as expounded by the DOH.
