On Friday, January 6, 2022, the Las Piñas City court dropped ₱1.25 million of charges of high-grade marijuana against the eldest son of the Justice Secretary, Jesus Crispin Remulla.
Juanito Jose Remulla III, eldest son of the Justice Secretary, was arrested on October 11, 2022, after receiving a parcel containing kush, or high-grade marijuana. It has about ₱1.25 million. On the other hand, the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) is trying to locate where the parcel came from.
In the span of 3 months, with a 34-page court decision, the presiding judge, Ricardo Moldez III, of the Las Piñas City Regional Trial Court (RTC), acquitted Juanito Jose Remulla III.
"there is a reasonable doubt that Juanito knew what the package contained, as indicated by his surprise when it was delivered to him." Moldez said in the statement.
The prosecution failed to establish that the drugs presented in court as evidence are the exact same drugs seized from the accused and examined by the crime to laboratory.
''When a court cannot be assured that the drugs presented as evidence are exactly what the prosecution purports them to be, a conviction will not be forthcoming," he added.
In a separate statement, the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) said, "The Court has seen both sides of the case and is in the best position to rule over the merits."
In an interview, Justice Secretary, Jesus Crispin Remulla said, "I hope he can redeem himself after he was cleared of illegal drug possession charges by a Las Piñas court."
In the latter half of 2022, the arrest of his son called for his resignation as secretary of the Department of Justice (DOJ). in which he said, "it will not happen."
