MANILA, Philippines - One of the prominently sworn pledges of the Philippines, "ππ’π―π’π΅π’π―π¨ ππ’π¬π’π£π’πΊπ’π―", recently undergone changes as of February 14, 2023, according to the new order issued by the Department of Education (DepEd), Order No. 004, series of 2023, to better emphasize the religious inclusivity and appropriateness of the oath’s message.
According to DepEd, the use of the word "π―π’π―π’π―π’ππ’π―π¨πͺπ―" instead of "π―π’π¨π₯π’π₯π’π΄π’π" was approved by the Pambansang Samahan sa Linggwistika at Literaturang Filipino (PSLLF), stating that it is "more inclusive, more solemn, and the choice for π―π’π―π’π―π’ππ’π―π¨πͺπ― is well thought of and extensively researched."
Aside from the PSLLF, DepEd also consulted different linguistic organizations such as the Linguistic Society of the Philippines (LSP), which "found the proposal for the use of ‘π―π’π―π’π―π’ππ’π―π¨πͺπ―’ to be well-written and sufficiently rationalized," and the Language Study Center of the Philippine Normal University (PNU-LSC), which, despite having a "different opinion" with regards to the amendment, still "expressed its support for the final decision" under the directive of the Office of the Undersecretary for Curriculum and Teaching (OUCT).
After the change of the pledge, the Vice President and Education Secretary, Sara Duterte, immediately instructed DepEd's schools and offices to disseminate the amend and strictly comply.
In all public and private schools, as well as DepEd offices, the "ππ’π―π’π΅π’π―π¨ ππ’π¬π’π£π’πΊπ’π―" must be sworn during flag ceremonies, classes and different school activities.
