Different fraternities over universities are known. They are also blatant for having welcoming rites that are not really welcoming—hazing. Mr. John Matthew Salilig, a 24-year-old third year chemical engineering student, was found buried in an open field in Brgy. Malagasang, Imus, Cavite on February 28, who died after allegedly undergoing initiation rites by the Tau Gamma Phi fraternity.

According to the police investigation, Salilig had attended "welcoming rites" conducted by the Tau Gamma Phi fraternity in Binan, Laguna, before he went missing on February 18. This incident is not new because there are many people who have already died from hazing. Before someone is called to be a member or part of the brotherhood, in some fraternities, they must undergo initiation rites first—wherein life is being exchanged for the sake of brotherhood.

Causing injury to someone or making them suffer first and doing it to test their loyalty and strength for the fraternity will always be a big question for me. What is the purpose of it if those actions will just lead to death? The case of Horacio "Atio" Castillo III in 2017, who died from alleged hazing injuries caused by members of the Aegis Juris Fraternity, is also the same incident with Salilig. They are both hazing victims.

These kinds of events must be banned and put to an end. It is horrifying to receive news about deaths of different students caused by bad actions and power tripping. This type of case also results in fear among students. Justice must be served for the victims. Hold the people behind those inhumane acts accountable.

Punish the mastermind and all of the people who are involved. The real brotherhood cares for each other and does not hurt each other. Destroying someone’s future just to prove something will never be good, regrets are always in the end. There is no, will never be, an unintentional act in killing someone.
