"Barya lang po sa umaga"—As the jeepney modernization has been implemented, could this really solve the issue or just add another problem? Indebtedness is what they protest, claiming that while they are mired in debt, others are prospering.
Jeepney Modernization was first introduced in 2017 Duterte Administration. For Jeepney drivers to afford it, the government offered a loan and a subsidy from the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB). However, it was later revealed, would be revoked at the end of March but would then be extended through the end of April.
Truly, Jeepney Modernization was an act for ensuring safety of the commuters and the health of environment. It is undeniable that a lot would benefit. However, looking behind the curtain, we see penniless Jeepney operators and drivers striving every day just to get paid their debt.
Traditional Jeepney Phaseout to Modern Jeepney means our traditional transportation since then will be put on hold and will remain as history.
Transportation Group needs to put their operation on hold just to make authorities realize what could have happened when they phased out Jeepneys. However, could a nationwide strike really be an answer? But then, it was an act without certainty as they fight for fairness. Modernizing Jeepney when no one is left behind.
As the Traditional Jeepney Phaseout eyes a better future, it is also eyeing the removal of one of the cultures of Filipinos and making operators and Jeepney drivers in debt as they face this new solution by the government.
