Decision making is always a part for the students who plan their future. Choosing a course and school to study is one of the hardest parts to decide on. Weighing the scale on which is more important, the dream course or practicality?

Transitioning from Senior High School to College level is fast approaching for Grade 12 students. College application also starts for the Grade 11 students as the University of the Philippines (UP) announces its opening of University of the Philippines College Admission Test (UPCAT) 2024 in the first week of March 2023.

2016 when the story of Karla Gonzales was featured in Rappler. She was a UP Civil Engineering student who juggled studying and working as a call center agent. Eventually, she graduated from UP—but it was not an easy journey for her. Hope and determination are her fuel to continue, even though it is tough.

There are many Gonzales out there who are also a Full time students and part-time workers. Struggles in life are what push them through. As a student, deciding where to go needs a lot of thinking and checking the circumstances of the specific situation. Money is always a factor, but what about the dream and goal of a student? It may sometimes become less prioritized.

Being a working student becomes an option because of practicality. It is hard to choose what your heart wants over practicality when hunger is on the line. Different struggles come along the way.

It is heartbreaking when you need to choose something over your dream. Nowadays, practicality comes first. But there are ways to survive while dreaming. State universities who offer free education are there, and students can grab it. Working while studying will never be easy, but it is an option for some as various workplaces offer jobs to less fortunate students.

There is no clear outline on what you must achieve in life at definite age. Studying is a part of life where it is not a race who finishes first. Each of us has an own path in life, therefore, we must not compare our current stage or achievements in life with others. Karla Gonzales is a living testament that getting through obstacles is difficult, but it should not drive us to give up. Therefore, it must give us the courage and determination to move forward.

"To my fellow call center agents who feel like it’s never the right time to fulfill their dreams, I would just like to say that the best time to start working on your dreams is NOW. You’ll always feel that you’re not ready but when you’re already on that path, you’ll do everything for that dream to come true," Gonzales said.

For graduating senior high school students, do not let money hinder you to achieve your dreams. Practicality may come first, but it is not impossible to achieve your dreams. Start working on your dreams, be wiser in making decisions, and don’t be afraid to take risks.
