MANILA, Philippines — Different transport groups set a week-long strike from March 6 to March 12 to oppose Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board's (LTFRB) public utility vehicle (PUV) Modernization Program.
The strike was projected to involve more than 100,000 PUVs from Metro Manila, Central Luzon, CALABARZON, the Bicol Region, and Cagayan De Oro. Over 200,000 commuters are estimated to be affected.
In response, the Department of Transportation's (DOTr) Secretary, Jaime Bautista, proposed a dialogue between the various transport groups and DOTr representatives, adding that they should talk before completely stopping operations in order to avoid misunderstandings.
However, Mar Valbuena, Manibela transport group's chairman, refused Bautista's call for a dialogue and stood his ground.
“Wala na munang diyalogo, I will stand on my ground. Tuloy na lang namin ito, kung ganyang nayayabangan na lang tayo. Subukan po natin sa Lunes, subukan po natin ng isang lnggo magkakaalaman po tayo,” Valbuena said.
In line with the impending strike, De La Salle University (DLSU) had already shifted all in-person classes to online classes for a week.
