Biazon.
Muntinlupa City is known as the “gateway to CALABARZON” as it is southernmost city of the National Capital Region. It is also dubbed as the “Emerald City”, which compared this dynamic city to the rare stone, carefully earned and geared to be perfectly polished and shaped, just like how Muntinlupa City take great delight in sculpting their city into perfection.
Considered as one of the youngest developing regions, the city is home to residential areas and many commercial establishments.
Let's have a look at this bustling and growing city's history, people and landmarks to commemorate their charter day!
The Story behind the 29-year-old City’s Name
There are three rumor versions in the origin of the city: First, an association with the thin top soil in the area called “munting lupa” or “little soil”. Second, when the Spaniards asked the residents what the name of the place during 16th century, residents told that the place is called “Monte sa Lupa”, as they thought the Spaniards were asking for the cards they were playing. The third version of the origin was thought to be that the place has mountainous land, which in Spanish term is “Monte”, then later expanded to “Muntinlupa” or “Mountain Land” [3].
Even the government got confused too! In the 1987, the Philippine Constitution misspelled the city’s name as “Muntinglupa” rather than “Muntinlupa”. [4]
The History of the “Emerald” City
Let's look back in the past when Muntinlupa City became an official city: During the 1600s, Muntinlupa was already under the supervision of the Augustinians. The residents received their religious lectures from the convention until Quijano Bustamante bought the land from the residents of Muntinlupa.
On December 19, 1917, the residents took a petition to the government for an independent status of the municipality, which was soon approved by Governor-General Francis Burton Harrison and became effective on January 1, 1918 under Executive Order 108.
Under the leadership of Mayor Francisco De Mesa, the first municipal hall was constructed.
Muntinlupa was included in the seventeen local government units comprising Metro Manila on November 7, 1975.
Later on February 16, 1995, the house of representatives approved the House Bill No. 14401, converting the municipality of Muntinlupa into a highly urbanized city. The city became an official charter city when President Fidel Ramos signed the Republic Act 7926 proclaiming Muntinlupa City as a 'city' on March 1, 1995.
Today, every corner of Muntinlupa City tells a story where the bond of community is unbreakable.

The languages they used are may be varied yet the hospitality of the residents is an added charm of the Emerald City.
