Iba, Zambales’ heat index peaked at a sizzling 53°C on Sunday, April 28, which is by far the highest recorded this year according to the report of the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA).

In response, PAGASA designated the province as being in the 'red zone,' signifying 'extreme danger' conditions.

Ana Liza Solis, in charge of PAGASA’s Climatology and Agrometeorology Division, warned that temperatures exceeding 52°C, categorized as 'extreme danger,' pose a heightened risk of heatstroke, particularly for individuals exposed to direct sunlight.

PAGASA advised the public to minimize outdoor activities, stay hydrated, avoid specific beverages, and utilize sun protection measures such as umbrellas, hats, and clothing with sleeves to mitigate the risk of heat-related illnesses.

Furthermore, the nation's weather bureau has emphasized, “Values beyond the 53°C Heat Index are estimates, which might already be unrealistic. Such values should therefore not be interpreted in terms of their absolute magnitudes, but rather on the health risks they pose to us," as stated in its five-day computed and two-day forecast as of 5 PM, April 28.

Over the last four days, Zambales consistently recorded temperatures of either 42°C or 43°C at the Iba station of the state weather bureau PAGASA. And as per the forecast for Monday and Tuesday, the province is anticipated to experience a similar lower heat index again.

The heat index is what the temperature feels like to the human body by factoring in both air temperature and relative humidity.
