American Singer-Songwriter Taylor Swift released her 11th studio album titled “The Tortured Poets Department” on April 19, 2024. It was written by Swift herself alongside her producers, Jack Antonoff and Aaron Dessner under the record label of Republic Records.

The album was announced on February 4 during her Grammy acceptance speech for winning Best Pop Vocal Album. Swift stated, “This is my 13th Grammy, which is my lucky number, I don’t know if I’ve ever told you, by telling you a secret I have been keeping for the last few years.” It contains 16 new songs and 4 bonus tracks featuring collaborations with other famous artists such as Post Malone and Florence and the Machine.

The title for each of the tracks were revealed 2 days later namely “Fortnite (ft. Post Malone.)”, “The Tortured Poets Department '', “My Boy Only Breaks His Favorite Toys”, “Down Bad”, “So Long, London”, “But Daddy I Love Him”, “Fresh Out the Slammer”, “Florida!!! (ft. Florence and the Machine)”, “Guilty As Sin?”, “What’s Afraid of Little Me?”, “I Can Fix Him (No Really I Can)”, “loml”, “I Can Do It With a Broken Heart”, “The Smallest Man Who Ever Lived”, “The Alchemy”, and “Clara Bow”.

Exactly 2 hours after the album’s release, Swift dropped an extended version of the album and revealed that it was secretly a double album named, “The Anthology”. She officially announced the surprise via her instagram with the caption,”It’s a 2am surprise: The Tortured Poets Department is a secret DOUBLE album. I’d written so much tortured poetry in the past 2 years and wanted to share it all with you, so here’s the second installment of TTPD: The Anthology. 15 extra songs. And now the story isn’t mine anymore… it’s all yours."

It contained additional 15 tracks including the bonus tracks titled, “imgonnagetyouback”, “Chloe or Sam or Sophia or Marcus”, “How Did It End?”, “So High School”, “Hate It Here”, “thanK you aIMee”, “I Look in People’s Windows”, “The Prophecy”, “Cassandra”, “Peter”, and “Robin”.

Swift took inspiration from the concept of the 5 stages of grief as she shared playlists with songs that categorize each stage: Denial, Anger, Bargaining, Depression, and Acceptance. She got the name of the album after her shocking breakup from her relationship with British actor, Joe Alwyn that she dated for almost seven years.

Many fans have speculated for a rerecording of her previous album ‘Reputation’. Instead, they were left in shock as they did not expect Swift to announce a brand new album. Additionally, others also thought it was a continuation of her recent album, ‘Midnights’ similar to her other albums, Folklore and Evermore.

The album features 4 different vinyl cover variants named after each of their bonus tracks named, “The Manuscript”, “The Bolter”, “The Albatross”, and “The Black Dog”.
