Rising queer pop artist Chappell Roan has won her first ever VMAs award as “Best New Artist” on September 11, at the MTV Video Music Awards. Her debut arrival at the VMAs has stunned many fans and other artists at the event.
During her acceptance speech, she stated how much her queer fans have helped her reach where she is currently. She also had her speech written down in her diary beforehand.
Roan stated, “I dedicate this to all the drag artists who inspired me. And I dedicate this to queer and trans people that fuel pop all around [and] to the gays who dedicate my songs to someone they love… or hate. Thank you to the people who are fans, who listen to me, who hear me when I share my joy and fears. Thank you for listening.”
Her acceptance speech has touched many queer people as Roan has been an openly queer artist who fights criticism and hate against the LGBTQ+ community.
In a post from X, a fan shared their feelings on Roan’s speech “Chappell’s speech hit me HARD. I am not [an] American or anything, but her talking about the queer kids who are scared to be themselves because of where they are. I get that so well living in a homophobic country knowing you'll never be yourself is so hard.”
She also had 4 nominations in the categories of Performance of the Year, for “Red Wine Supernova”, Best Trending Video for “HOT TO GO”, Song of the Summer, for “Good Luck, Babe”, and Best New Artist in which she won.
In addition, Sasha Colby, Roan’s favorite drag artist that inspired her, was the one who handed her “Moon Man” trophy.
During Roan’s time at the awarding ceremony, she also performed her hit single “Good Luck Babe” with a medieval and fiery themed costume which the audience sang along loudly.
