Local dream pop five-piece band Megumi Acorda is captivating audiences with their ethereal sound, glimmering on a wave of dreamy admiration from the Manila scene. While the band is so introverted that they couldn’t face the audience, choosing instead to focus on their rows of effects pedals, they have established themselves as one of the leading indie acts in the country today.
“Lahat kami [ay] introvert!” the band said, speaking over each other. At that time, the members who are now permanent acted more like session musicians, staying true to Megumi Acorda’s musical arrangements—the person, not the band.
The band Megumi Acorda, consisting of the main artist Megumi Acorda, Bijan Gorospe, Kevin Ingco, Evee Simon, and Jerros Dolino, began as a solo venture for the frontwoman and primary songwriter.
Although the band is named Megumi Acorda after its main artist, Megumi Acorda, the group is more than just a solo project. Originally, the band started as a solo venture for Acorda, who is also the primary songwriter.
Their individual styles enhance their dynamic and chemistry as a band, though it didn’t begin this way. In reality, the members of Megumi Acorda are far from shoegaze snobs, having all been involved in various local acts across a range of genres.
Acorda joked about making a reference to Wong Kar-Wai movies, playfully suggesting that people expect them to listen to shoegaze.
The progression led to the creation of their debut full-length album, Silver Fairy, which was released earlier last year. Acorda revealed that the term 'silver fairy' was "taken from the idea of the 'golden child.'
They released their debut EP, Unexpectedly, in 2018, followed by a quarantine session of the EP in 2021, which both feature four tracks.
And since then, Megumi Acorda has played numerous gigs both locally and out of town. They also mentioned that they have more gigs scheduled to continue sharing their signature Megumi Acorda fuzz harmonies with audiences—unveiling more distorted elements to their music.
