Whether you're a horror enthusiast or someone new to this genre, this is a sign to grab your popcorn and dive into the realms of horror to elevate your experience this spooky season.
Watching movies is a great way to celebrate any occasion. From birthdays to anniversaries, you can never go wrong with streaming films, even more so when it's Halloween. With the various spooky ideas or beliefs that arise during this season, this activity can make your time much more thrilling.
THE SHINING
Released in 1980, The Shining is a horror movie with a touch of psychological drama. This film ranked first out of the thirty-four movies included in the IMDb poll. It was written by Stephen King, Diane Johnson, and Stanley Kubrick, who also directed the movie. The Shining featured actors like Jack Nicholson, Shelley Duvall, and Danny Lloyd. It won different awards in the film industry, such as the following: 2014 OFTA Film Hall of Fame winner for Motion Picture, 2018 National Film Preservation Board winner, and 2012 Saturn Award winner for Best DVD Collection.
The story of this movie revolves around Jack Torrance, a novel author who brought his family along to be a caretaker of an isolated hotel. During their time there, Jack notices an eerie phenomenon in the infrastructure. His son, Danny, also has gifted psychic abilities, which only added to their uncomfortable, to say the least, stay in the hotel. From then on, their family faces a series of mind-boggling challenges and plot twists.
Viewers describe The Shining as a classic masterpiece. Although it's one of the older movies out there, it is successful in making the audience invested with its ability to induce fear and capture the very essence of horror.
THE EXORCIST
Directed by William Friedkin, The Exorcist is one of the most liked horror movies from 1973. This film focuses on the supernatural and ideas of being possessed by evil spirits. The Exorcist was written by William Peter Blatty, who is an Oscar title holder for this film. The characters of the horror movie were portrayed by actors including Ellen Burstyn as Chris MacNeil, Max von Sydow as Father Merrin, and Linda Blair as Regan.

From the title itself, Psycho is a horror film that uses psychological approaches to induce suspense and thrill on the audience. First aired in 1960, this movie was directed by Alfred Hitchcock and didn’t take long to become a hit. Psycho was written by Joseph Stefano and Robert Bloch and was based on real-life events. Anthony Perkins, Janet Leigh, and Vera Miles starred in this film as Norman Bates, Marion Crane, and Lila Crane, respectively. Psycho achieved awards like the 1997 OCTA Film Hall of Fame winner for Motion Picture, the 1992 National Film Preservation Board winner, and the 2009 Saturn Award winner for Best DVD Classic Film Release.
The said horror movie tells about Marion Crane, a young woman who worked as a secretary and was struggling financially. One day, when her employer assigned her the task of taking a large sum of money to the bank, Marion decided to run away and bring it to her boyfriend in California. On her way there, she stops at a motel, which she eventually realizes was a big mistake because of the manager, who had mental health issues, and his mom, who was simply put, a psycho.
This film plays with the minds of the audience to portray horror. Although it has less action than other movies, Psycho still delivers a spine-chilling sensation that greatly impacts its viewers.
THE TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE
This horror movie is not for the faint of heart. Directed by Tobe Hooper, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre is a film from 1974 that is filled with gore and extreme violence. It was written by Kim Henkel and the director himself, Tobe Hooper. The horror movie’s cast included actors like Marilyn Burns as Sally, Edwin Neal as the hitchhiker, and Allen Danziger as Jerry.
There is a wide variety of selection available when it comes to horror films. Whether it be psychological, gore, or paranormal themed, a good horror film can hit the spot. The director of this critically acclaimed film is John Krasinski, also known for his role as Jim in the show The Office. Aside from the director himself, A Quiet Place was also written by Bryan Woods and Scott Beck.
This movie grabbed many awards, including the 2019 Saturn Award winner for Best Horror Film, the 2019 Critics Choice Award winner for Best Sci-Fi/Horror Movie, the 2019 Satellite Award winner for Best Sound (Editing & Mixing), the 2018 Kansas City Film Critics Circle Awards winner, and so on.
