Top-PH universities De La Salle University (DLSU) and University of Santo Tomas (UST) have declared suspension of classes for students and faculty members on Tuesday, February 25, in commemoration of the 39th anniversary of the EDSA People Power Revolution.
While the Marcos administration made the decision to declare the EDSA People Power Revolution a working day, some universities and Catholic schools still pushed for the suspension of classes.
UST has organized various activities, including worship services, academic discussions, and cultural events, to encourage student participation in commemorating the People Power Anniversary.
"As we commemorate the EDSA people power revolution, we are reminded of the power of unity, courage, and peaceful action. Let us stand united and never forget that true power lies in the collective will of the people, and it is our responsibility to uphold the values of integrity, justice, and freedom for generations to come," read in a memo from the Office of the UST Secretary General.
Meanwhile, DLSU students and staff members have been encouraged to be part of the occasion as part of the "alternative learning day."
"Students, faculty, and staff are encouraged to participate in activities commemorating the event during this alternative learning day. All campuses shall remain open for the holding of alternative activities," it wrote.
De La Salle Araneta University said in a different statement that postponing classes and work in different DLSU campuses was done to preserve the importance of the crucial event in history.
"Although the government has declared this day a special working holiday, it is our conviction that the Lasallian community should have the opportunity to reflect on the values and sacrifices that defined People Power," La Salle Araneta's Office of the Chancellor stated.
"We encourage everyone to engage in initiatives that foster historical awareness and civic engagement, both within and beyond the classroom. Take time to reflect on the message and importance of this occasion. Happy People Power Day, Lasallians!" it added.
Critics oppose designating the EDSA Revolution anniversary as a special working day, viewing it as an attempt to diminish the importance of the event that marked the end of former President Ferdinand Marcos Sr.'s martial law.
