President Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr. and Indian Prime Minister Narenda Modi on Tuesday, August 5, launch joint naval patrols in South China Sea to enhance defense and uphold maritime rights amid the rising tensions.
The joint patrols involving multiple naval vessels from several countries are widely regarded as a response to China's expansive territorial claims in the region, which China has criticized as outside interference in its regional affairs.
Despite China's objections, the Philippines and India emphasized their support to upholding international maritime laws and ensuring freedom of navigation in the region.
The two nation will join forced together to strengthen submarine infrastructure to improve their maritime capabilities.
These initiatives are part of a comprehensive strategic partnership that includes trade, defense, maritime security, space exploration, tourism, and digital technology.
“This marks a significant enhancement in our partnership. With this partnership, India becomes only the fifth strategic partner of the Philippines,” Marcos stated.
Both leaders have reaffirmed their commitment to a rules-based international order and promised to continue working together on tackling shared security challenges in the Indo-Pacific region.
