Economic ministers from the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) will discuss the widening conflict in the Middle East during their retreat, while foreign ministers will also hold a virtual meeting on the crisis affecting global markets, on Friday, March 13.

The Philippines, this year’s ASEAN chair, will host the meetings as officials examine how rising oil prices and interruptions in shipping, logistics, and trade could impact the region.

Philippine trade undersecretary Allan Gepty told reporters, “The concern is a given,” and emphasized that Southeast Asian countries cannot overlook the crisis’ effects on inflation and employment.

Nearly two weeks after joint strikes of the United States and Israel on Iran, roughly 2,000 people have been killed, while energy markets and transport systems worldwide have been severely disrupted.

The conflict has also impacted the Strait of Hormuz, a major passage for oil and liquefied natural gas to Asia, raising alarm among Southeast Asian economies that depend on Gulf supplies.

Moreover, ASEAN officials are expected to explore coordinated measures to mitigate economic risks while urging all parties to exercise restraint and resolve the conflict through dialogue.
