NEWS: "The New Way of Researching" By Allen Paolo M. Mirondo

In just a few months, 1498 estimated Grade 12 students from Lyceum of Alabang are enrolled in Practical Research 2 this school year 2020 – 2021 even though the cases of COVID-19 keeps rising and rising as of today.

Ms. Kaylyn Albay, the research coordinator of Lyceum of Alabang, states that Practical Research 2 in Grade 12 is affected by this pandemic (COVID-19) but she formulated a program called “Emergency-Remote Teaching”. This idea is for every student in Lyceum of Alabang who are undergoing the abruptly changing pedagogy and andragogy in the norms of teaching. This includes the transferring of all traditional materials into digital.

Ms. Albay also expresses that the research ethics and protocols in the old normal can still be used in the new normal. “It is just we added some rules so that it can adopt in this period and follow the health and standard protocols such as no congregation of respondents, observe physical distancing, wearing of PPEs, minimized mobility and transportation, recording of travel histories, and COVID-19 related symptoms. This is to ensure the safety of the student researchers, subjects, and the participants or respondents.”

According to OOKLAS’s speed test global, the Philippines ranks 121st out of 139 countries in mobile internet speed and places 110th out of 174 countries in broadband internet speed. Many students from Lyceum of Alabang are experiencing a lot of problems in terms of connections and outdated gadgets, especially Senior High School students with upcoming practical research. Nonetheless, Ms. Albay mentions the term “Digital Divide”. She creates a poll in her classes about those who can access these or those who have this kind of gadget. After that, she groups them according to their answers so everyone can make and finish what they propose.

For those students who are still worried, Ms. Albay declares that she will accept late outputs at this time of the pandemic. She gives advice to all the students to have their own time frame and a well-executed plan before conducting research. As alternatives, there will be no printed materials in submitting the paper, all outputs will be on an electronic copy. Interviews, surveys, and meetings will be held digitally on Microsoft Teams, Google Meet, Zoom, and other online platforms.

Despite the situation we are facing right now, Ms. Albay conveys some advantages of having a research during the pandemic. She states that the students will have a new research method, which means it is a new way of learning too. Students will also practice their Academic and Scholarly writing skills. Moreover, it masters discipline in conducting research, learning new things, and discoveries. Lastly, it is not just emphasizing your academic skills, it also focuses on the growth of mindset rather than having a close mind.

"Research does not seek difficulties, it overcomes difficulties. If you clothe yourself with the characteristics of researchers and find this role as important, you will identify that research seeks growth and development." Ms. Albay says. “Remember, even if you have good specs for a laptop, if you cannot maximize it to full potential, you are losing its value. Let’s empower the technology or the resources that we have. That’s why I carefully allocate those students who have the resources and to those who don’t have.”

She adds, "Research is emotionally and mentally draining even in the old normal. Added by the circumstances during these times, which will be doubled, let’s be more patient with one another and persevere in this trying time. Yes, not all people have a strong mind, that’s why we need to be kind. Practice honesty, humility, and integrity. We should not limit ourselves by the circumstances but envision things. Without vision, people will perish.

Finally, she wants to say to the students taking Practical Research subjects, "It’s the year 2020 and it is a perfect year – the perfect year to try new things you’ve never done before. If you seek growth and unleashing your potential – try researching things you are so curious about. For research doesn’t equate difficulties, it overcomes difficulties."
