LITERARY: "Assessment" by Eric Paulin

The human told them to bulk up and prepare

And the chicken took this as a challenge

He ate his food and worked out.

All the other chickens were competitors to him.

He took his vitamins willingly;

The one given to them by their kind owner.

He wanted to be the best chicken among the rest.

He wanted to be the master's favorite.

He wanted to please their human owner the best way he could.

And when the judgment day arrived,

All chickens lined up voluntarily

Nervous whether to pass the test or not.

Despite their anxiousness came excitement.

Everyone wanted to rank first and beat the rest.

The protagonist came prepared, ready for today's contest.

The consistent sound of loud thud echoed

Repeatedly throughout the day

And as the chicken drew near the examination table,

He realized that it was not a competition at all.

It was their destination on the way

To being next week's meal, which teachers called 'real world'.
