NEWS: "Philippines eyes start of COVID-19 vaccine rollout by the end of February 2021" by Allen Paolo M. Mirondo

The Philippines, the second most affected country by the COVID-19 pandemic in the Southeast Asia, allotted PHP 75 billion for COVID-19 vaccine that can be used by 57 million Filipinos in this year 2021. A list of COVID-19 vaccines that the National Government is going to buy can be seen below. 


Moderna COVID-19 Vaccine or mRNA-1273 from the United States and United Kingdom are expected to be here in the Philippines in the second quarter of the year, with the efficacy rate of 94.1%. The Philippines has made a deal with Moderna, and the National Government will buy 20 million doses from them, acording to Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque. 


Also, the Philippine Government, alongside private companies and local officials, signed a deal with AstraZeneca Plc. from the United Kingdom, which will secure an additional 14.4 million doses, with a total of 17 million doses because National Government signed a deal last November with 2.6 million doses and is expected to arrive in May or June. Based on evidences of clinical trials, AstraZeneca is 90% effective in preventing laboratory-confirmed COVID-19.


25 million doses are secured by our National Government from CoronaVac, the first 50,000 doses are going to arrive in February. CoronoVac developed by biopharmaceutical company called Sinovac. ACcording to their study, CoronaVac was just 50.3% effective in preventing COVID-19. This is the second most expensive vaccine which cost PHP3629.5 per 2 doses. 


Pfizer BioNTech from the United States, with an efficacy rate of 95%, may be among the first to arrive in the Philippines, vaccine czar Carlito Galvez said. The National Government talks about buying up to 40 million doses from Pfizer, but still no official confirmation from the Government signing a deal to BioNTech. 


Both Russia's Sputnik V and Johnson and Johnson vaccine from United States got no report and statement yet from the government about signing any contract.
