The Philippine National Police (PNP) released a statement on September 3, 2022, saying that from July 1 to August 31, a total of 149 cases of kidnapping female students were recorded, mostly in the National Capital Region (NCR).
PNP Chief Gen. Rodolfo Azurin said that the majority of the 149 cases of kidnapping of female students were rapes, while the other cases were acts of lasciviousness and violations of Republic Act 9262, or the Anti-Violence Against Women and Their Children Act.
Azurin reminded the children to follow their parents and not to trust strangers.
While the intention of the PNP was not to create panic, but to give caution to the students. "Our intention is not to create panic, but we caution the students to always be vigilant around their environment," said Azurin.
On the other hand, the Department of Education (DepEd) is coordinating with the PNP to secure the safety of students with the resumption of face-to-face classes.
