The "backbone of Luzon" is another name known for Sierra Madre, the longest mountain range in the Philippines. Its length is 500 kilometers, and its highest peak above sea level is 1,266 meters. Some of the Philippines' most precious wildlife, such as the enormous golden-green sea turtle, the golden-crowned flying fox, and the Philippine eagle, may be found in the Sierra Madre highlands. The Sierra Madre's 540-kilometer surface area is crucial for dissipating strong typhoons, which is beneficial for the Philippines as we experience, on average, more than 20 typhoons per year.

Even the most powerful typhoons can't penetrate Luzon's natural defenses provided by the Sierra Madre. It has been known to lessen powerful storms in the past. It has a substantial surface area that is speckled with several slopes and bends that can aid in breaking the typhoon's eye and result in slower wind speed, so it can shield the Philippines from typhoons. Prior to the Kaliwa Dam's proposal, the Sierra Madre was in good condition and under protection. The Kaliwa Dam's primary function is to ensure water security. The project also aims to lessen reliance on the Angat Dam by increasing the raw water supply to fulfill Metro Manila's future potable water demand.

The majority of our Sierra Madre is being destroyed by massive machinery as the Kaliwa Dam emerges. The Sierra Madre provides the mountain range with the ability to act as a natural typhoon barrier, weakening incoming typhoons from the Pacific Ocean before they reach the central mainland, providing safety to the Filipinos.
