The rise of false narratives has been more deadly than ever; it has been the cause of fables flying in the alleys unnoticed.
These “satire” pages intentionally spreading false information in the guise of a satire flag worsen the epidemic of false narratives.
Satire news is a trend nowadays, as people can easily be manipulated by what they see on the internet. The satirical posts use humor, irony, and exaggeration to criticize someone commonly in politics.
When misused, however, instead of actually being a “valid” form of expression, it contributes to the rise of false narratives.
The internet has one of the most influential things people can cling on, such as their views on certain things that will be changed when they saw something relatable or even fake news. In this generation, heavy satire was close to what 'fake news' is. It is both accessible and can be seen all over social media nowadays.
Using words such as "presidential-reject" and making up quotation banners with words that the person involved did not say is a straight-up spreading of disinformation, yet it is lightly taken as the news clearly has "satire only" and "news you can't trust".
The Philippines scored the lowest out of 79 countries in reading comprehension in the survey last year that was conducted by the inter-government group Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD). The lack of reading comprehension is an opportunity to spread this satirical news as it will dominate the minds of those who read and takes everything literally such as paying attention only to reading and not understanding what they have read.
Disinformation and misinformation-driven satires are essentially the shadows of demons we wrestle with. They shall not reign. False information is a longtime enemy, taking many forms.
We must dismantle fabled lies orchestrated by brute beasts wearing the skins of fairies. Critical thinking must be etched in everyone's mind.
