OSAKA, JAPAN - Coming in speedy yet heavy was Melvin
Jerusalem of the Philippines as he took out Japan’s reigning World Boxing
Organization minimumweight champion, Masataka Taniguchi, on a solid
second-round technical knockout and regained the momentum of the country’s
boxing champions after its drought on Friday, January 6.
"This victory is for the Philippines and for my
family," Jerusalem quipped. "This also goes out to my Zip-Sanman
team. Of course, I am thankful to my coach Michael Domingo, who worked hard
with me during training camp. I will not stop training hard after this."
It was a moment of intense back-to-back pounds from both
Jerusalem and Taniguchi at the second round, as the titleholder’s numerous
attempts to gain an opening fell flat due to a quick left-right combination
tremendously executed by the challenger that swooned Taniguchi for a moment.
"I don’t remember how the bout went, but I got floored
clean. I was naive receiving a punch like that,'' Taniguchi added.
Jerusalem ended Philippines’ five consecutive championship
losses with this fight; now with a nine-fight winning streak, the 28-year-old
Melvin heightened his record after a dry world title bid in 2017- as he made
his way up, marked with high ratings in four major world boxing organizations.
Acting as a shining beacon of light for the future boxing
battles to happen, Jerusalem grabbed the first champion title for the
Philippines this 2023 with his impressive 20-2 current record.
