Department of Agriculture (DA) Spokesperson Rex Estoperez said in an interview that prices of red onions from select markets in Metro Manila range from P450 to P550 per kilogram and vary in sizes.
In line with the continuous rise of prices of red onions, Estoperez said in the Super Radyo dzBB interview, "To be reasonable on that and practical — pero mukhang maraming magagalit sa 'kin — e 'di ‘wag tayong bumili ng isang kilo, di ba? Kung ano lang ang makakaya nating bilhin, ayun muna."
The prices of onions last November 2022 soared up to P250 to P300 per kilogram, based on data from the DA. In a short span of time, prices were doubled because on December 28, 2022, the cost of red onions in Las PiΓ±as public market reached P720 per kilogram, according to a news report on GMA News.
It was November 16 when the DA reported that the government was taking into consideration of importing 7,000 metric tons of red onions to end the continuous rise in the price of the product. While Rex Estoperez stated in his previous statement that if the supply has not stabilized by early next year, the DA will continue to assess whether it is necessary to import onions.
