MANILA, Philippines—Cube satellites Maya-5 and Maya-6, developed by the Space Science and Technology Proliferation through University Partnerships (STeP-UP) Scholars of Philippine Space Agency (PhilSA), marked down another success to Philippines’ milestones in space technology as they set off in orbit to the International Space Station (ISS) on Monday, June 5.
Upon the launch, the PhilSA quoted, "This milestone is the (sixth) successful launch to space of satellites that are made through the collaboration of the Philippines and Japan — including Diwata-1 and Diwata-2. The CubeSats are another addition to the roster of nanosatellites developed and sent to space by our country."
These locally-developed CubeSats are meant to expand skills and knowledge regarding orbital satellites with the help of foreign institutions such as Kyushu Institute of Technology in Japan, where Maya-5 and Maya-6 were tested in 2022.
Engr. Paul Jason Co, the STeP-UP Project Leader, mentioned that Maya-5 and Maya-6 are to be operated through the Philippine Universities Ground Archiving and Data Receptipon (PUGAD) at the University of the Philippines Diliman.
With this another milestone, Engr. Co believes that the Philippines will have more space opportunities in the future with the development of these CubeSats.
CubeSats previous satellites, Maya-3 and Maya-4, were both launched successfully on August 29, 2021, and had completed their mission on August 4, 2022, as a part of the on-going program of STAMINA4Space led by Dr. Maricor Soriano.
