In a world where academic competency, readiness for the future, and work performance are all highly considered for a common standards for ‘success’, most high school students would certainly feel the pressure of entering their college lives.

While it is true that the future holds various uncertainties, it is important that we take a look as to why we worry for our future and how we can ease these worries to better prepare ourselves for the future.

Success is important for an individual’s life, and the pressure of being successful will surely take a toll on our thoughts if not properly handled. Now, let’s dwell deeper to the "whys" of this heavy pressure on academic success.

Financial struggles hold back the flexibility of our choices. In one of the articles from BestColleges, 32% of high school students rated the costs of pursuing higher education as the biggest factor that will impact their plans after high school. It is no wonder that anxieties for a better future rise because most students seek to break free from financial issues and have a better life.

Mental health and difficulty with decision making also cause builds up on stress among students. In the previously mentioned article, mental health struggles and difficulty with decision making both ranked 2nd and 3rd, respectively, as some of the impacts on plans after high school. Inability to take care of oneself while dealing with academic stress surely adds to the pressure to do good for the future.

Family stress among students also piles up in this pre-college worry. An article from The Haven College stated that students feel pressured within their families to make their parents proud, keep up with the family’s success, and continue receiving support from them.

Despite these huge obstacles on our way to a good future, the hope is still there. We can overcome these pressures for the future in different ways that suit our situation. Listed below are some of the ways to combat anxieties about the future.

Prepare yourself as early as you can for college tests and admissions. We may think that there are better ways we could’ve done our previous academic performances, but all we have now is to improve ourselves. Start by preparing the requirements, your mental capacity, and reviewing as early as possible in order to feel a little more at ease during this period of college preparation.

Consider a path in college that truly interests you, not just for the sake of practicality. Even if practicality is highly considered in our lives, perhaps our interests would be the best path for us. It would also give us comfort and confidence in our choices since, sometimes, our interests hold our best qualities in life.

Reach out to people you trust for help and advice. We may be independent enough to deal with most of our stresses in life, but it’s not bad to reach out for help every now and then. Through this way, worries may get cleared up from the experiences or advice given to us. This can also help us make ourselves comfortable with the path we want to take.

The future is full of unknown paths that life will eventually unfold for us. We may not always be able to control certain aspects of our lives, however, we still have choices, time, and opportunity to ensure that our path will lead us to a better life.

Entering college is not a small feat, and being ready to face that hurdle is essential for us to be comfortable where we are now. All we have to do is brace ourselves for the road ahead of us.
