The moment one found out that the unfairness tethered them so far back from their rights, a red string passed by their gaze— a sign that the revolution had been ignited.

While it is undeniable that the battles fought by these various heroes are forever marked down to history, the traces of scars, blood shed, and silenced voices will forever echo in the Pearl of the Orient Seas.

Today, on August 28, the Philippines commemorates the National Heroes Day to give respect to the country’s esteemed protectors, unnamed or named. It’s also on this day where we relish the freedom given to us by the countless loss and persistence among these Filipinos.

They are not just heroes by title, but by deeds and words, which impacted the nation’s view of love for the country. Perhaps, these people even made some of the common citizens question their own loyalty to the country; a thought that some did not like and made them revolt against their own men.

Despite this, these heroes poured all that they could to defend the country: to see the nation’s children smile, once again as bright and as warm as the sunlight; even if it takes years, blood, tears and sweat. Their voices and actions will be loud as ever.

We as Filipinos now indulge this peace as of this moment. This independence is not just gained by just saying the word ‘sacrifice’. It’s far greater than that. This independence is built by the undying patriotism, love, selflessness and efforts to attain the greater good for the Filipino people.

This independence was built by, not only by sticks and stones, but also the struggles that the Filipino heroes pushed through and the numerous times they had to keep their nationalism constant due to the poison of colonialism that engulfed our lands.

These Filipinos are heroes, and this land we swore to die on, is their ground to continue blooming the flowers amidst the chaos that is the struggles of this world.
