Identifying which output is made by a human and what is made by a robot or specifically by an Artificial Intelligence (AI) is getting harder day by day. In today’s generation, AI has been a progressive thing—its fast pace of progress inside the society is somehow scary because AI can be good but if not used in an ethical way, it can be dangerous to society.
In September 2023, as stated in the news report by GMA, they introduced the country's first AI sportscasters [1]. It received different comments and opinions from the community—showing both positive and negative sides. The AI sportscasters are named Maia and Marco. Their physical features, voice and script are purely associated with human features. They really do sound like humans but there is still a noticeable difference between an AI and a Human—the expression, feeling, and the natural way of humans when it comes to reacting.
Broadcasting or mainly journalism is part of the society which holds a significant role. It is something that cannot go missing. It must be delivered by a person and limited to it only. The ethics and respect to the journalism industry must not be removed.
The role of a journalist comes with a big responsibility and an AI can never replace it—AI cannot meet the qualifications to deliver a good and perfect report. An AI has many features and abilities that they can do fastly—but high quality is at stake—it can never be capable of being a journalist.
A publication named The Guardian posted an article created by an AI and they mentioned in the main article that it is an AI made output [2]. It is an awareness to the readers that some contents that you can see online or in other platforms can be from an AI. In some other perspective, this kind of thing is somehow scary because AI is really intelligent and it is trying to replace humans, not just help. AI’s characteristic of being ‘too good’ can turn into a negative thing especially if we fall into its improper way of usage.
Artificial Intelligence can really be helpful to make things easier, but it must only be a tool. Credibility, accountability, and sensibility are one of the characteristics a good journalism must have and the AI cannot have.
Journalism contains factual information, showing all the sides of a story with no biases, speaking up even if it's sometimes crucial, criticizing—at any time of the day. Those are the skills of a human journalist—skills that an AI cannot gain.
