The Philippine National Railway (PNR) is set to suspend operations for 5 years to make way for the construction of the North-South Commuter Railway (NSCR) project on March 28.

The PNR stated that operations will be suspended at Governor Pascual-Tutuban and Tutuban-Alabang, the two opposite end stations in Metro Manila.

According to Transportation Secretary Jaime Bautista, PNR will remain closed "until the NSCR is completed and starts operations," as stated to GMA News Online.

The final train trip of the PNR, according to Transportation Undersecretary for Railways Jeremy Regino, "will be on Holy Wednesday, March 27.”

The temporary closure of the line's Metro Manila operations is scheduled to start by mid-January of this year, according to a statement made by Regino, the PNR's general manager in October of last year.

"To give more time for the public to adjust to the stoppage of operations, which will better commence during Holy Week," Regino explained when asked why it was moved to late March.

In order to accommodate customers who would be impacted by the PNR suspension, alternate bus routes have been set up in cooperation with the Land Transportation and Franchising Regulatory Board (LTFRB).

With an anticipated daily capacity of 800,000 passengers, the NSCR is ready to relieve traffic in Metro Manila and boost economic growth in all the cities and municipalities it passes through.
