Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) reported three "short-lived" phreatic eruptions in Taal Volcano located in Batangas last April 20, Saturday.
Two successive phreatic eruptions occurred between 8:50 a.m. to 8:52 a.m. and 9:09 to 9:12 a.m., PHIVOLCS said. Third eruption was recorded at 11:02 a.m., PHIVOLCS said in a separate post on Facebook.
First two minor eruptions produced white steam-laden plumes that rose 350 meters above the main crater before drifting west-southwest and southwest. The third one lasted for five minutes and triggered a 300-meter plume that drifted northwest.
According to the state seismologist, phreatic eruption is a steam-driven explosion that occurs when water, either below the ground or on the surface, is heated by magma, lava, hot rocks, or fresh volcanic deposits.
Alert Level 1 remained in effect for Taal Volcano, indicated an ongoing abnormal activities, persistent abnormal conditions and the continuous risk of eruption.
"Phreatic events were likely driven by the continued emission of hot volcanic gases at the Taal Main Crater and could be succeeded by similar phreatic activity." PHILVOCS said.
PHILVOCS warned that sudden phreatic explosions, volcanic tremors, and minor ash emissions are possible, posing significant health and safety hazards.
It is also advised that visits in Taal Volcano Island is prohibited, particularly in the Main Crater and Daang Kastila fissures.
