The United Nation’s climate chief pushed the world's governments to a 2-year deadline to take the initiative for the planet’s health, lessening the effects of climate change in a speech on Wednesday, April 10, as global warming is fading off politicians' priority lists.
"‘Two years to save the world’ is meaningless rhetoric — at best, it’s likely to be ignored, at worst, it will be counterproductive,” commented Michael Oppenheimer, an international affairs professor and climate scientist at Secretary of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change.
"We still have a chance to make greenhouse gas emissions tumble, with a new generation of national climate plans. But we need these stronger plans, now," he added.
During a Chatham House think-tank event in London, Stiell pointed out that the Group of 20 top economic powers, who collectively account for 80% of global emissions, must urgently step up.
This year's UN climate negotiations seek to reach an agreement on new climate funding to assist developing nations struggling to invest in the transition toward avoiding fossil fuels and addressing climate change.
