The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) announced that 1–2 tropical cyclones are expected to enter the Philippine Area of Responsibility in May.
PAGASA weather specialist Rhea Torres explained two possible scenarios according to their climatological tracks.
In the first scenario, she said that the cyclone might recurve away from the country after its landfall.
“Sa unang scenario po ay posible po itong lumapit ng ating kapuluan bago ito mag-recurve papalayo ng ating bansa,” she said.
In the second scenario, she asserted that if the entry point of the typhoon is lower or if it forms in the eastern section of Mindanao, it may possibly go through Eastern Visayas, Bicol Region, Mimaropa, and certain parts of Calabarzon before it recurves away.
“Yung second scenario naman kung mas mababa po yung entry point ng bagyo or mabuo po ito sa may eastern section ng Mindanao posible po itong tahakin ang bahagi po ng Eastern Visayas, Bicol Region, Mimaropa, at ilang bahagi ng Calabarzon bago po ito lalabas sa may WPS at magre-recurve po ulit palayo ng ating kapuluan,” she said.
However, Torres added that there is currently no low-pressure area within or outside the PAR that is expected to be a typhoon.
PAGASA also mentioned that no tropical cyclone has been formed within the Philippine Area of Responsibility since the start of 2024.
The said weather forecast was announced in PAGASA's climate forum on Wednesday, April 24.
