Subject: A love I can never reach

I drift through the edges of my feeble mind,

a place where hopeless voices collect in the dust,

You are there—a presence just beyond my reach,

like a line of verse, I almost remember,

but it slips away like the first light of dawn.

In another life, I might have told you everything—

shown you the quiet corners of my heart,

though I know I could never reach you,

even farther from the observable universe itself

So I will let my heart settle, unsaid.

I wonder if you sense it too,

the gaze that I have for you,

that moves between us in the spaces we don’t fill with words

a gravity that tugs at the edges of what’s possible,

but never quite brings us close enough to touch.

I wonder how much I have fallen,

the gravitational pull you have on me—

stretch me far enough to reach your Roche limit.

Turned me into rings that will always revolve around you

like the beautiful rings that adorn Saturn.

But alas, soon it will disappear

Such as my love for you will do the same.

If I could, I would hold you there forever,

where our silence carries more weight

than anything we could ever say out loud.

But for now, I’ll just leave this here,

a fragment of what will linger.

And maybe—one day—

you’ll find it in the quiet moments

before the somber night takes you,

and know it was meant for you.
