In present day society where social media has a strong influence in the lives of many, be sure to choose the right influencers to support and admire. As individuals with high online reach, they can easily persuade their audience on various social issues, especially on political matters, which makes them significant figures in today’s world. But where do you draw the line if someone you look up to becomes an instrument for promoting propaganda and manipulative tactics?

Amidst the ongoing campaign period for senatorial candidates and party list groups, Filipino vlogger Cong TV has caused quite a stir online after being revealed as an endorser of the Solid North partylist. A total of 190 partylist are seeking to run in this year’s midterm elections, and one of the party list groups is the Solid North partylist that represents Northern Luzon and aims to address issues in the agriculture sector. [1] However, the said partylist has faced numerous issues which raises the question about their capability to serve the country, along with Cong TV’s principles as a well known vlogger. Knowing the power of social media influencers in shaping public opinion, this could easily give them the upper hand which could lead to dirty electoral outcomes.

Among the concerns that has tainted the reputation of the partylist is the recent allegation of vote buying. The issue started when a resident of Abra filed a formal complaint against Menchie Bernos, first nominee of Solid North partylist. [2] The complainant stated that the attendees allegedly received tumblers containing ₱3,000 in cash. Despite stern warnings about vote buyings, it’s concerning how a lot of politicians similar to Bernos, continue to commit election fraud. If one can blatantly carry out such criminal practices, what more could happen once they get elected? Aside from this recent allegation, Menchie Bernos has also been criticized for her questionably wealthy lifestyle despite her husband possessing only ₱64 million net worth as of 2016. [3]

As an influencer who came from a poor background, it is quite ironic how Cong TV chooses to promote incompetent leaders who do not have the heart for the poor. Those who flaunt their wealth openly and violate strict policies will surely do no good in the government so promoting these candidates is nothing but a huge mistake. Whether it was a matter of receiving a huge amount of money or not, it’s important that we take the time to reflect on choosing politicians that are qualified to provide public service.

Social media influencers might have a profound impact on society, but it’s essential to recognize that their impact can also pose risks, especially in a world where everything is political. We must know the gravity of our choice as individuals with a vast number of audiences because our opinions and advocates can sway public sentiments. And if you truly look up to an influencer, you should learn how to critically evaluate the information they spread online and hold them accountable for their flawed views. We must still bear in mind that we have the power to make our own decisions, so at the end of the day, it is up to us whether we vote for these unqualified politicians or not. Our political stance reflects our moral compass so let’s not be blinded by money or, instead we should use our platform to promote leaders that are trustworthy and authentic, and as citizens of our country, let’s educate ourselves about the candidates before we elect them as leaders so we can shape a bright future for the Philippines.
