The International Criminal Court (ICC) has paused its decision on former President Rodrigo Duterte’s request for interim release to allow his legal team more time to submit key information, delaying the ruling on whether to grant him temporary freedom on Wednesday, July 23.
In a majority decision, Pre-Trial Chamber I opted to hold off on ruling on the interim release request until the Defense makes further moves on the case or until the Chamber finds it appropriate to proceed.
"To ensure that a decision on the interim release request is properly informed, the majority finds it appropriate, under the circumstances, to postpone issuing a ruling until the defense takes further action on the matter or until the Chamber deems it suitable to proceed," the decision stated.
Furthermore, FPRRD’s legal defense team filed an urgent request for interim release on humanitarian grounds, citing his advanced age of 80.
The application, submitted on June 12, 2025, and was opposed by both the prosecution and the Office of Public Counsel for Victims (OPCV).
Moreover, the defense later submitted another urgent motion on July 14, requesting a suspension of the ruling on the interim release, citing obstacles caused by delays in obtaining essential information needed to support their case.
The Chamber emphasized that the second issue, which involved the performance of certain procedures, was rejected.
It further clarified that the current decision should not be seen as a prejudgment of any aspect of the interim release request, including its eventual ruling in the ongoing proceedings.
