Heads turned and expectations were shattered as Accountancy, Business and Management, General Academic Strand and Industrial Arts (ABM-GAS-IA) delivered a shocking comeback against Arts Social Science and Humanities, and Humanities and Social Sciences (ASSH-HUMSS), securing a thrilling 2-1 fiasco in Mixed Badminton Championship on October 16 at the Badminton court.

Fresh off their semifinal contention, Reign Marasigan and Jackie Bermejo of ABM-GAS-IA faced off against Zachary Paculanang and Mary Joy Domdom of ASSH-HUMSS in an intense showdown for the coveted Mixed Badminton Championship title.

Paculanang and Domdom comfortably held the early lead with their powerful smashes and taking on Marasigan and Bermejo’s errors to secure a large 8-point margin at 12-4.

Marasigan and Bermejo found their footing and quickly answered back with multiple drop shots and stretching the set into a deuce, but Paculanang and Domdom took advantage of the opponent’s backcourt with a 2-point service ace to clinch the first set, 22-20.

Adjusting their strategy, Marasigan and Bermejo also began exploiting the backcourt with deep, aggressive clears and minimizing soft errors at the net, the tactical switch easily paid off as they completely dismantled Paculanang and Domdom, closing out the set at a large 20-12 and forcing a decisive 3rd set.

With the momentum shifting to Marasigan and Bermejo, they rode on it to deliver a strong start in the third set on a large 5-point margin, but Paculanang and Domdom retaliated, capitalizing on 3-point consecutive service aces to level the set into a nerve-wracking 10-10.

Marasigan and Bermejo stayed composed and held their nerve until the end until eventually finding a blind spot for a sneaky net attack, sealing the championship title at 15-13.

Bermejo shared that their determination to avenge their elimination-round loss against the same opponents fueled their comeback. She also emphasized that their victory would not have been possible without the unwavering support of their fellow strandmates, whose encouragement pushed them to fight until the end.

“We wanted to redeem ourselves after losing to them during the elimination round. The support of ABM-GAS-IA gave us the motivation to keep fighting and push through until the end,” Bermejo shared.

Marasigan and Bermejo’s determination and unwavering spirit led them to prevail in the match up and defeat their foe with a statement reverse sweep.
