LITERARY: "The Sight of Fear"

By: Immanuel Floyd Lim

Kaylee had a lot of relatives and a couple of friends who said they had seen or heard things that they couldn’t really explain in their house. Well, the house was about a hundred years old. It was owned by an old man until he passed away. Her family moved in when she was fifteen. When she was nine years old, she used to sleep over at her friend’s house with her older cousin. The house that they were currently living at was only in front of theirs. It was very spooky! The next morning, their neighbor told them all that he woke up in the middle of the night.

He said that he looked out of the window to see what looked like a shed burning down across the street. He watched the huge fire for a few more seconds before calmly closing the curtains and got back into bed. He could still recall, but couldn't explain why he didn't wake anyone or why he just went back to sleep. It frightened their thoughts when her friend’s mom told them that when the house was newly built 'back in the day,' there used to be a large stockroom customized across the street for storage purposes, but it mysteriously blew up and burned to the ground.

It even killed the couple residing at the house near the huge explosion. When her family actually moved in, a relative or a friend would think they saw something in the corner of their eyes or would hear something that nobody else did, but they never paid it any real attention. At least Kaylee didn't, until her little brother had a crazy experience on the same night.

She woke up in bed but she felt paralyzed, but her mind was just alert and she continued to open her eyes. Suddenly, she felt that she was levitating out of her body to the ceiling. She turned around a little and now she was facing downward as she was floating upward, and watched herself asleep. Slowly, panic came into her as she reached the ceiling.

She sat up for a couple of minutes, not knowing what had just happened. The next morning her brother explained that the same thing happened to him without her even mentioning her experience first. They knew that they had experienced astral projection just like what happened in many horror movies. But the worst thing that happened to her was on the midnight of October 13th, when she couldn’t blink or move as she stared at the form looking at her.

She could tell through the darkness that it's barely 4 feet tall, and although she couldn’t see any of its features, she felt the pressure of 100 eyes on her, and there was no word that could explain the mix of dread and terror in that moment. Kaylee was shocked and immediately reached up to smack the light switch. Still, she stood frozen, my eyes fixed on the spot where the figure was present. She never told them or anyone what she saw. She told herself that she didn’t want to cause a rumor. That was the first real freaky thing that happened to her at that house. She never wanted to experience it again.
