Seven poultry plant workers in southern Russia had been infected with bird flu following an outbreak at the facility in December 2020. According to BBC news, this is the first case of H5N8 being transmitted from poultry to human. Here are the information that you need to know about Avian Influenza /H5N8.


Avian Influenza is a disease occuring only on wild aquatic birds and it can infect domestic poultry and other animals only. This influenza is a type A disease which is very contagious if transferred to humans. Infected birds can transmit the virus through mucous, saliva, and feces. They can also become infected through contact with surfaces that are contaminated with the virus from infected birds, CDC said.


Based on the study of professionals, H5N8 do not normally infect humans but several cases of H5N8 has been detected in Southern Russia back in December. The spread of this virus is very rare. Human infections with bird flu can happen when enough virus gets into a person’s eyes, nose or mouth, or is inhaled. The feces or mucous exposure have a high chance of getting infected by the flu. However, some infections have been identified where direct contact was not known to have occurred. Illness in people has ranged from mild to severe, Based on the reports of CDC.


Fortunately, "All seven workers from Southern Russia are now feeling well," said the head of Russia's consumer health watchdog, Anna Popova. She said that adequate measures had been quickly taken to stop the spread of infection. There was no sign of transmission between humans, Ms. Popova said, adding that the case had been reported to the World Health Organization.
