FEATURE: "Is Santa Claus true?" By: Jacqueline Nicole Solo

Christmas is coming and we’re all waiting for Santa Claus, but is he true, though? Does Santa really exist? Every year, Santa Claus gives gifts to "good" children across the world and we all know he has eight reindeer and is married to Mrs. Claus. However, you may have some questions regarding the jolly old Saint Nick, such as whether he is a genuine person. What is Santa's age? When is his birthday, by the way?

St. Nicholas is said to have been born around 280 A.D. in the village of Patara. According to the blog Email Santa, Santa Claus is 1,750 years old as of 2021. Based on Yahoo News, Santa’s birthday is on March 15. He is known for his kindness and piety. Nicholas' fame grew throughout time, and he became recognized as the guardian of children and mariners. On the 6th of December, the anniversary of his death, his feast day is observed. This was once thought to be a great day for making significant purchases or getting married. By the Renaissance, St. Nicholas had become Europe's most popular saint. St. Nicholas retained a high reputation, notably in Holland, even after the Protestant Reformation when saint veneration was banned.

Santa Claus is commonly pictured in the United States as flying from house to house on Christmas Eve, delivering toys to children. Dasher, Dancer, Prancer, Vixen, Comet, Cupid, Donner, Blitzen; and Rudolph, the most renowned reindeer of all, accompany him on his magical sleigh. Empty Christmas stockings—once empty socks, now often special stockings manufactured for the occasion are "hung by the chimney with care, in hopes that St. Nicholas will soon be there," as Clement Clarke Moore put it in his famous poem. In addition, candy canes and other sweets, as well as tiny toys, can be put in stockings. On Christmas Eve, children write letters to Santa and trace Santa's progress throughout the world, thanks to his wife, Mrs. Claus. On Christmas Eve, children frequently leave cookies, milk, and carrots for Santa's reindeer. Santa Claus has a "naughty list" and a "good list" to decide who gets gifts on Christmas morning, and parents frequently use these lists to ensure their children are behaving well.

The Legend of Saint Nicholas continued to be passed around Europe in the 16th and 17th centuries. In the 1770's, a newspaper referenced "St. Nicholas, otherwise called Santa Claus." This is the first known reference to Santa Claus in the U.S.

Do you think Santa is true now?
