SPORTS NEWS: "Despite Being Outrebounded, The Lakers Defeated The Timberwolves" by Anya Sotomayor


 


For the first time in three tries this season, the Lakers finally defeated the Timberwolves. On Sunday, January 2 (Monday, January 3, Manila time), the Los Angeles Lakers defeated the Minnesota Timberwolves with a 108-103 score despite a significant rebounding disparity.  LeBron James led the way with 26 points, while Malik Monk chipped in with 22 points.

Russell Westbrook scored 20 points for the Lakers, but he also made eight turnovers on a night when Los Angeles had 28 rebounds to Minnesota's 56. The Lakers defeated the Timberwolves for the first time in three tries this season.

Los Angeles won for the third time in nine games, a streak that began with a 110-92 loss at Minnesota on December 17th, when star Anthony Davis hurt his knee and, since then he hasn't played again. 

The Timberwolves fell for the fifth time in their previous six games, despite Naz Reid's season-high 23 points and 11 rebounds. In the fourth quarter, Reid was kept scoreless.
Minnesota was missing two of its top three scorers, Karl-Anthony Towns and D'Angelo Russell, who were both in COVID-19 protocol.

The Timberwolves' Anthony Edwards had 18 points but 8 turnovers. Minnesota dropped its fourth straight road game, despite Jaylen Nowell's 17 points. The Timberwolves grabbed 20 offensive rebounds to the Lakers' four.

Minnesota led 72-66 with 6:37 left in the third quarter when the Lakers went on a 10-0 run to take a 76-72 lead. The Timberwolves lead the game 80-78 entering the fourth quarter.
With 4:56 remaining in the fourth quarter, the Lakers used an 11-4 run to transform an 89-88 deficit into a 99-93 lead on a jump jumper by Westbrook. After Minnesota got within 99-98 with 3:35 left, the Lakers rallied on an 8-2 run to take a 107-100 lead into the final minute.

For the Lakers, Avery Bradley and Carmelo Anthony each had 14 points. With Anthony scoring 9 of those in the fourth quarter, although James had 7 rebounds and 5 assists, he was limited to under 30 points for the first time in eight games.

The Wolves were led by Malik Beasley's 16 points and Patrick Beverley's 12 points and 9 rebounds.
