A Moroccan boy identified as Rayan, fell 32 meters (100 feet) down the empty shaft in the remote village of Ighrane in Chefchaouen province on Tuesday afternoon.
Rayan's mother said that his son fell while playing outside of their house and was found after the boy started crying.
The hashtag 'SaveRayan' went viral in North Africa and different regions across the world, giving their prayers and support as rescue operations progressed throughout the week.
The 5-year-old boy was retrieved by rescue teams from the well on Saturday but did not survive his ordeal, state media reported.
