LITERARY: "Bringing yourself back together" by Jasmine Samio

Classification: Prose

Theme: Recollecting oneself

Synopsis: It's exhausting to try to please others to the point that the candle you bought for yourself is being consumed by everyone else around you.

-

You often perform in accordance with what is taught to you. You speak in accordance with what you want others to hear from you. You create your tale based on what they tell you about the storyline and how many words you need, not on the rhythm of your heartbeats.

You constantly forget about yourself.

When you're so preoccupied with doing favors for others, you frequently forget to do favors for yourself.

When you're so busy nursing other wounds, you frequently fail to blow away all of your mess, patch up all of your stains, and pick up all of your shattered pieces.

You frequently lose yourself.

From embedding your own metaphors.

From your own poetry.

For someone else's story.

What a shame that is.

You frequently rob yourself of your soul and inarticulate all of your inner voices in exchange for someone else's echo.

This time, think about yourself.

You don't have to always think about what's best for others, and you don't always remember to clean up after yourself.

You don't frequently forget how your own voice sounds when you talk in someone else's tone of voice.

You don't often consume yourself for someone else's fullness.

This time, start filling up your spirit.

Recollect yourself this time.
