MANILA, Philippines - As the Christmas Break draws near for
learners, educators, and employees, the Department of Education issued new
guidelines for celebrating Christmas parties within public schools and the
department’s central and field offices that encapsulate "a genuine
celebration of hope, unity, and service for others every Christmas
season," on an order released last December 2.
Stated on DepEd order No. 052, 2022, signed by Vice
President and Education Secretary Sara Duterte, contributions, gifts, and
participations must strictly be voluntary while also "keeping in mind the
true spirit of the season and austerity called for by the difficult economic
times."
Due to the restrictions that were implemented since the
COVID-19 pandemic and the problems it has caused to the economy, the order also
asks that the celebration themes must not cause expenses that could trouble the
parents, learners and employees and that "gift-giving should be guided by
the spirit of sharing and should not lead to extravagant spending."
Order No. 052 also indicates that "Private schools,
community learning centers, as well as state/local universities and colleges
(SUCs/LUCs) may choose to adopt the provisions of this DO as basis in the
conduct of their own Christmas parties or celebrations."
