MANILA, Philippines— After the Philippine senators’ meeting with the representatives of the European Parliament (EP), one of the legislative bodies of the European Union (EU), that was held on Wednesday, February 22, Sen. Ronald “Bato” Dela Rosa criticized the EP in an interview with ABS-CBN News Channel (ANC) on Thursday, February 23.
After EP’s expression of “deep concern” to the extrajudicial killings during the meeting, Dela Rosa referred to the EP as “world police” for allegedly interfering with Philippine sovereignty in regards to urging the country to allow the International Criminal Court (ICC) to investigate the War on Drug Operations that took place during former President Rodrigo Duterte’s administration in 2016.
He felt that the representatives of EP were like teachers lecturing the Philippine senators, and that they were being treated with inequality. He also expressed his belief that the Philippines has its own independence and a “functioning judicial system” to look into the cases of alleged human rights violations during the drug war.
During February 20, Sen. Jinggoy Estrada filed Senate Resolution 492 in order to express the institution’s strong opposition against ICC’s investigation. President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. also declared that the Philippine government refuses to participate in the said investigation, saying that the ICC has no power or authority to make legal decisions and judgements in the country.
Dela Rosa was the Philippine National Police (PNP) chief during the peak of the drug war; after his term, the Philippines withdrew during 2019 from its membership after being a signatory of the Rome Statute that established the ICC.
