In a school set up, there are different kinds of activities that are given to the students. Forming a group is a common thing for the students so they can learn how to collaborate and to lessen the workload. Developing stronger communication skills, planning and managing time, sharing of diverse experiences, social support, and more are some of the benefits of group work, as stated in an article from Carnegie Mellon University.

The term "dumbbell" was popularized in the video from Vincentiments entitled thesis rant. This word has been used by the students because it means someone is not helping or contributing to the group work that makes the other members suffer.

The purpose of groupings is good because according to Caruso and Wooley (2008), group projects can help students develop skills that are important in the professional world. But sometimes, the main purpose of groupings is being neglected as it results in a burden—students who do not know how to cooperate create a negative atmosphere.

Groupings are like mixing of different people with different attitudes, skills, and perspectives. There are different types of learners, the fast learners and slow learners. The fast one can just easily know something or learn, but it goes the other way around for the slow learners. Through this, we can say that each student must know how to blend in with their group. They must know how to cooperate with their groupmates—and for the leaders, they should be more considerate and understandable as learners have different levels of intelligence.

Being a ‘dumbbell’ is different from being a slow learner, and the students should know how to differentiate the two. Group work means the team must be working as group or as one. Students who just rely on their groupmates and do nothing are the worst, as they put more burden to the team’s workload.

To create a healthy space for groupings and continue its main objectives, the students must know how to identify if their member is struggling or they are just really lazy to work. Being considerate won’t hurt, but too much of it is not good. Complying on each assigned part is the bare minimum in a group.

While for the students who are just lazy to comply, they must remember that they are also students and their groupmates too. There is a grade that can be affected and people who will suffer if they don’t attend to their responsibilities. Group work must ease the heaviness of workload and create fun. It should not be a cause of stress.
