Pride month is celebrated in the month of June to commemorate the hardship and battles of people who sought for self-expression. It is attributed for LGBTQIA+, who showed bravery and fought for their freedom and equality against the discrimination and oppression through the decades.
Pride month started during police discrimination and harassment towards LGBTQIA+ community. Uprising and movements, protests, road rages, and riots happened in New York City, June 1969.
Until every year and then the LGBTQIA+ celebrate the anniversary of Uprising, and as time goes by June was declared as "Pride Month".
Every roads and cities is full of bright and vivid rainbow color, symbolizing the LGBTQIA+Community. For them, it is the right time to raise awareness regarding this violence towards their community. LGBTQIA+ raised awareness and celebrated diversity through the years and continuously fighting for their rights.
Thousands of people that belongs to the LGBTQIA+ community gathered and marched in Stonewall in June 1969. Pride month reminds us the bravery of these people and their battle against the oppression, violence, discrimination, and deprivation of liberty they faced that still exists up to this day.
Pride Month celebration in Philippines
Pride march is conducted yearly in Metro Manila, Philippines. For this year of 2023, the event organizer released the teaser video last March 6 with the title "Save the date" featuring the Pride march, which will happen on June 24.
The organizer stated, "Tara na, muling magsama-sama, makinig sa isa’t isa, at simulan ang diskusyon para sa ating taunang Metro Manila Pride March and Festival!"
The official venue, march route, program schedule, and safety reminders will emailed prior the event.
